In The Wellspring of Black Feminist Theory By Linda Burnham she argue that “Black feminist theorists have advanced the view that Black women’s experience as women is indivisible from their experiences as African Americans”(2). They should be examined as both but people always seem to neglect the African American experience and embrace the gender aspect.
Over and over we hear what women need, what women want, and what is needed to be gender equal. However, these concepts have been dominated from the perspective of white women. We really don’t see the experience of each race itself and how each race experiences inequality differently. Linda argues that race is not being encompassed in feminism and that “black women were subordinated on the basis of both race and gender...”(6). This idea is very accurate if we just analyze the news itself we never really see the explosive conditions that black women are put through, but we see how white women are. One way that we really don’t see the black women's experience or view is in media. White women are standing up to feminism however, we rarely see black women telling their story.it makes it seem that white women are the ones that are standing up for women rights.
I have seen in media how Serena williams recently had her baby and it says alot about black women who get medical treatment. Which is crazy because many women advocate for better healthcare during childbirth, but black women keep suffering or. Are being ignored. Personally when I had my daughter the resident she was white told me I was not ready to push and told me to hold on the urge. However, the nurse she was colored and had previously described how the feeling would feel when I would have my daughter. The resident and doctored completely ignored what I was saying and left the room. The nurse was furious and she got ready to deliver the baby. By the time the doctor and resident came in the nurse was already delivering my baby. It just comes to show that although medical procedures are improving women of color are being ignored and their stories are as well. And I bet the white doctor took the credit for the delivering, but the nurses whom the majority were of color care of the patient. They do the work. They listen but shouldn't the doctors listen as well.
How do we try to incorporate the black women's experience to the minds of people who are hard headed? Can we? How do politicians view the black feminist theory?
First of all, I'm sorry for your experience while having your daughter. I agree that women of color are oppressed and looked different just because of the color of their skin. It is hard for someone who suffers of double jeopardy like Burnham mentions on page 5 to live a life without oppression. To answer your question I believe it is hard to change someone's mind about black women if they are not willing to change. That's why some times people are violent when it comes to marching out in the streets in order for those people to see there needs to be a change.
